The BSA is sad to learn of the death of Harry Goulbourne, Professor of Sociology at London South Bank University.

His books included Ethnicity and Nationalism in post-Imperial Britain (1991), Race Relations in Britain since 1945 (1998), and Transnational Families (with Tracey Reynolds, John Solomos and Elisabetta Zontini).

He was born in 1948 in Jamaica, moving to England in the late 1950s. After a year teaching at a secondary school in south London, he completed his DPhil at the University of Sussex in comparative politics and taught at the University of Dar Es Salaam (1975-80) and the University of the West Indies (1980-86). He later joined the University of Warwick, moving to LSBU in 1998 and working there until 2012, when he became honorary professor.

Professor Claire Alexander, of the University of Manchester, said: “‘It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of Professor Harry Goulbourne. His passing was very sudden and unexpected, following a fall.

“Many of us worked with Harry across the years or will have used his work on racism, immigration and transnational families. His books were important interventions in shaping the study of race and ethnicity in Britain. We pass our sympathies to Harry’s family at this sad time.”

A memorial service will be held.
